Wine Review: 2005 Bernal Estates Syrah – CA
July 8, 2010 -
Still flying the friendly skies so I decided to taste the red. A 2005 California Syrah. Let’s see how it goes.
Tasting Notes:
Color: Dark Ruby
Nose: Mild for a Syrah, low alcohol at 13%. Bacon Fat, Dark Berries, with some Smoked Wood.
Taste: As expected, nothing over the top. Dark Fruits with some peppery spice. Tannins are a little wavy and wine lacks layers and complexity.
Finish: Smooth, persistent, Balanced.
Overall Experience: Surprised me a bit as this wine was smoother and more balanced than I expected. Yes it was simple but it was easy to drink, getting the job done for what it is.
Score: 85 points.

Wine Review: 2007 Hayes Ranch Sauvignon Blanc – North Coast, CA
July 8, 2010 -
Flying the friendly skies with American Airlines en route to a good friend’s wedding and was thinking why not see what the sommelier has to offer.
Tasting Notes:
Color: Light Straw.
Nose: Serious melon jumps out of my plastic glass with some flowers budding underneath.
Taste: As expected lots of fruit, Honeydew. Medium bodied, a little fat as not much acidity is present. Nothing too complicated going on here.
Finish: Long lingering finish, smooth with no hard edges or bite.
Overall Experience: A simple wine that is 5-6 months past a fresher prime. Nose and palate disappointed as this tasted more like a Chardonnay than a fresh grassy Sauvignon Blanc
Score: 82 points.

Wine Review: 2008 Chapoutieur Cotes du Rhone Blanc

Wine Review: 2008 M.Chapoutier Cotes du Rhone Blanc
July 5, 2010 -
Since a Frenchman, Sylvain Chavanel, is found to be wearing the maillot jaune after the second stage of this year’s Tour de France, I find it fitting to review a wine from his homeland. This selection, easily found in the United States, is a value at the $10-$15USD price-point.
Tasting Notes:
Color: Straw.
Nose: Moderate at the surface with stone fruits and flowers. No secondary aromatics present.
Taste: A bright acidity attacks the palate with most of the fruit hiding. After cutting through the acid , lots of minerals found with a slight hint of wet stones.
Finish: Moderate, Acid present throughout, dry.
Overall Experience: A simple wine that begs for a piece of cheese or some fatty pork.
Score: 84 points.
